about us

minke are rod devonshire and gareth lynn.

we met in brighton in 2000, and have been collaborating since 2001.

our music is the result of far too many late nights spent trawling our extensive music collections for samples.

we are an av act, and have appeared at a number of festivals (festinho, gazastock, moorfest, drop beats not bombs) and electronica / av nights (digital city, concrete, strax, baked beats, the big chill house).

here's how lookandlisten described our live show :

minke are maestros of the krautpop loungecore scene, who will be travelling to the land of the north with a bulging sack of audio and visual wonderment. their musical reference points include easy listening, warped pop, charity shop bargains, electronic weirdness and other audio oddities. you can probably imagine that their visual reference points are just as eclectic, best classified as modern retro. expect samples from the golden age of advertising and film, with yet more classic gentlemens entertainment thrown in, so we’re told ! sit back, relax and let minke envelope you in av molasses.

history

rod has been making music for twenty years.

after several years playing in a series of ill-fated bedroom bands, by the mid-90s, he was one third of house trio bush babies, whose sole release "delicious" had more than a whiff of fromage about it.

with the income from this single, rod invested in a home studio, and since 1998 has pursued a more eclectic musical direction.

rod also guests occasionally with laroca at their gigs.

likes : bracken, and lacey bond. dislikes : dunstable.

gareth has been hunched over his woolworths guitar and 4-track since adolescence, drawing his primary influences from the music of ice cream vans and

public information films.

likes: bracken, and lacey bond. dislikes: banjos.

buff

most of our tracks are started by gareth, on a pc running acid.

rod then takes 'em and gives 'em a bit of spit and polish at his home studio the boring room, adding sounds from his collection of prehistoric analogue synths, dusty old 70s beatboxes, casio keyboard, sampler and melodica.

all the sounds are recorded into his pc for further mangling, buffing, and general faffing, eventually emerging at the other end as minke.

thanks to andy ralph and saul parker for lending reg your synths.
